Benzinger Tammie

Tammie L.S. Benzinger, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Radiology and Neurological Surgery and serves as Medical Director for the MRI services at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Christian Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.  

Dr. Benzinger leads the Knight Alzheimer Research Imaging (KARI) Program, which serves as the imaging core for the Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center, and for the international studies of autosomal dominant AD, the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network (DIAN) and the DIAN-Therapeutic Unit (DIAN-TU). The group pioneers translational PET and MR imaging to investigate biomarkers for Alzheimer disease, and works to translate these into research studies, clinical trials, and clinical practice. 

Dr. Benzinger earned her bachelor’s degree from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts and both her medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago. She completed both her diagnostic radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) at Washington University, where she continued as a faculty member. 

Dr. Benzinger is a recipient of the American Society for Neuroradiolgoy (ASNR) Scholar Award, the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) Scholar Award, and the ASNR Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award. She is a Distinguished Investigator of the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research, and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).
